Pompom Tips: How to Attach a Pom Pom to a Knitted Hat

How to Attach a Pom Pom to a Hand-Knit Hat

Adding a pom pom to your hat is one of those tiny joys that makes the whole project feel complete. It’s cute, it’s fun, and it instantly gives your hat personality. The best part is that attaching one is much easier than most people think.

What You’ll Need

  • Your finished hat (Shameless plug: I recommend any of my hat patterns)
  • A pom pom (yarn or faux fur)
  • A tapestry needle and scissors
  • A button for the inside, less than 1" in diameter (optional but super helpful)

Step 1: Prep the Pom Pom

If your pom pom has yarn tails or an elastic loop, you’re already set. If it doesn’t, you can thread a bit of yarn through the center so you have something to tie it with.

Step 2: Thread It Through

Turn your hat inside out. Feed the pom pom tails through the top center of the crown. If your hat has a small hole at the top, use it. If not, simply insert your needle near the center and pull the tails through to the inside.

Step 3: Use the Button Trick

💫This is the secret to a clean, secure attachment. Hold the button on the inside of the hat, then thread the pom pom tails through two of the buttonholes. Pull gently until the pom sits nicely on the outside. Tie a snug knot and, if you want it removable, finish with a bow instead of a double knot.

Step 4: Adjust and Fluff

Turn the hat right-side-out and check the placement. Give your pom a little fluff or trim if it needs it. If it looks slightly off center, retighten the ties inside.

Why This Works

  • Keeps the pom sitting tight against the hat
  • Makes the attachment secure without puckering the fabric
  • Lets you remove the pom for washing or swapping out pompoms
  • Works with yarn and faux fur poms alike

Quick Tips

  • If the pom pom feels wobbly, tighten the tails a bit more.
  • If you’re attaching a faux fur pom with an elastic loop, the button method works perfectly.
  • Want a permanent attachment? Skip the bow and tie a firm double knot.

Attaching a pom pom doesn’t need to be intimidating. Once you try this method, you’ll never go back. It’s tidy, secure, and gives your handmade hat that irresistible finishing touch.
