Enhancing Your Knitting Skills: 7 Invaluable Lessons for Beginners

Embarking on my knitting journey once more, I eagerly enrolled in a course at my local yarn store. While I grasped the fundamentals like the basic knits and purls, the long-tail cast-on, and the bind-off techniques, I soon realized there were invaluable lessons I wish I had learned much earlier in my knitting life. I share these insights here, hoping that novice knitters can benefit from my experiences and embrace these tips, tricks, and techniques sooner rather than later.

1- Reading Your Knitting

It took me a year or two to grasp this fundamental skill. What does a knit or a purl look like on your fabric? How can you decipher yarn overs, knit 2 togethers, or even M1L and M1R increases? And what about those previous rows—knits, purls, increases? When do you cable? These are questions that plagued me until I learned them.

Understanding the texture and structure of your knitting is like unlocking a secret language. It's the ability to interpret your stitches as they form, enabling you to anticipate the next move in your pattern. Reading your knitting enhances your confidence and independence as a knitter, allowing you to tackle more complex projects with ease.

2- Leg Orientation

During a course at Stitches West, I had the privilege of learning from Patty Lyons, whom I highly recommend. Understanding the concept of the "leading leg" is a game-changer. The leading leg is the one closest to the needle tip and is determined by the direction we wrap our yarn. This knowledge will help you identify twisted stitches and whether you've made a mistake.

By mastering leg orientation, you gain a deeper understanding of the mechanics of knitting. You'll no longer struggle with twisted stitches or worry about the integrity of your work. This newfound knowledge empowers you to knit with precision and confidence.

3 - Yarn Quality Matters

In my early knitting days, I often opted for acrylic yarn from big-box stores. There's nothing wrong with that, but I couldn't help but notice that my projects didn't quite measure up to others. It was only after I Googled "LYS definition" that I discovered local yarn stores (LYS) and a world of higher-quality yarn options. While budget constraints may limit your choices, consider that for just a few extra dollars, you can elevate your work with mid-range yarns. It's an investment worth making.

Yarn is the heart and soul of your knitting projects. Its quality impacts the look, feel, and longevity of your creations. Exploring the world of yarn, from luxurious fibers to unique colorways, is a delightful journey that adds depth and character to your knitting experience.

4 - Using Stitch Markers

I was flabbergasted by how other knitters could work intricate patterns without getting lost until I discovered stitch markers. It took me years to purchase my first set, but now I make them myself because they were such lifesavers. Stitch markers are essential for marking pattern repeats, indicating where to increase or decrease, or sectioning off your knitting.

Stitch markers are more than just practical tools; they're a creative extension of your knitting. Choose markers that complement your project's color scheme or reflect your personal style. They not only keep you on track but also add a touch of flair to your work in progress.

5 - Laddering to Fix Mistakes

A knitting night revelation changed my perspective on fixing mistakes. I used to believe that once a mistake was made, it was there for eternity. But a kind lady showed me how to ladder down and correct errors. Now, I can fix pattern and cabling mistakes in minutes, and I'm forever grateful for her guidance.

Learning to ladder down to correct mistakes is like having a magic wand in your knitting toolkit. It grants you the power to undo and redo, ensuring that every project turns out just the way you envisioned. With this skill, you can fearlessly tackle intricate patterns and challenging stitches, knowing that you have the ability to make things right.

6- Blocking Does Help

Blocking, despite sounding fancy, is a simple technique that can transform your finished garments. Soak your item in water, remove excess moisture, and lay it flat to eliminate kinks and achieve the desired shape and drape.

Blocking is akin to a spa day for your knits. It relaxes the fibers, smooths out imperfections, and enhances the overall look and fit of your creations. Embrace blocking as a transformative step in your knitting process, and watch your projects come to life in a new light.

7 - YouTube is Your Friend (Google is your friend, too)

Don't be intimidated by knitting techniques. YouTube and Google are treasure troves of knowledge. There is nothing, NOTHING, that you can't learn on YouTube or Google.

Whenever you encounter a challenge, watch video tutorials or read articles to expand your skills. Create a list of five techniques you'd like to learn in the next year and start researching now. You can do it!

The internet is a boundless source of inspiration and guidance for knitters of all levels. Whether you're seeking assistance with a new stitch pattern, troubleshooting a tricky technique, or exploring advanced knitting methods, the digital realm offers a wealth of resources at your fingertips. Embrace the power of online learning to fuel your knitting journey and foster your growth as a skilled and confident knitter.

Incorporating these lessons into your knitting journey will undoubtedly enhance your skills and make your knitting projects even more enjoyable.

Happy knitting!
