Stitch markers are small, lightweight tools that can be used to mark specific stitches or sections in your knitting. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and they can be made from a variety of materials. Some popular types of stitch markers include plastic stitch markers, metal stitch markers, wooden stitch markers, charms stitch markers, beaded stitch markers.
When I started to knit, I didn't know they existed. I imagined all knitters were much better than I and couldn't figure out how they managed to knit complex projects without making any mistakes! I kept thinking that other knitters must be so much smarter than I, because their knitting was perfect! Only after a while did I realize that they pulled it off by using stitch markers. This was one of many knitting revelations. If you've never used stitch markers, drop your knitting project right now, go get some, and come back.
Once I started using them, I was hooked! I quickly moved from simple stitch markers to pretty ones, because it helped me stay motivated with my knitting project. I would stock up on those during knitting and fiber events, before I realized that I could buy them online.

No matter what type of stitch markers you use, the benefits are clear. Stitch markers can help you to:
-
Keep track of your progress in a pattern.
If you are knitting a complex pattern, it can be easy to lose your place. Stitch markers can help you to keep track of where you are in the pattern and avoid having to frog back (undo) your work. For example, I always use a larger marker, or my favorite marker, to mark the beginning of row/round. So every time I slip it, I know I've made it one more row!
-
Avoid making mistakes by reminding you where you are in the pattern
If you are knitting a long row, it can be easy to lose your place and accidentally knit the wrong type of stitches. Stitch markers can help you to keep track of where you are in a row and avoid making mistakes. For example, placing a marker at the point where you need to increase for a sleeve will remind you every time that you've hit that spot in the pattern.
-
Save time by not having to frog back (undo) your work.
If you make a mistake, it can be time-consuming to frog back your work and start over. Stitch markers can help you avoid making mistakes in the first place, saving you time in the long run.
-
Knit more efficiently by not having to stop and count stitches as often.
If you are knitting a large project, it can be tedious to stop and count stitches and pattern repeats every few rows. Stitch markers can help you keep track of your stitches without having to stop and count them as often. place a small marker on your blankets of shawls every pattern repeats or every 10, 20, 25, 50, 100 stitches so you know exactly where you are.
-
Stay motivated by seeing your progress as you work.
It can be easy to get discouraged when you are knitting a large project. Stitch markers and progress keepers can help you stay motivated by showing you how much progress you have made. Every time I slip my beginning of round marker, I know I've made it one more row!
-
Knit more complex projects by keeping track of different sections of the pattern.
If you are knitting a complex project, it can be helpful to keep track of different sections of the pattern. Stitch markers can help you to do this by marking the beginning and end of each section. Separating pattern repeats with marker will help you keep track of where you're at and if you're making a mistake before you've reached the next row. For example, when I was knitting the Sebastien Baby Blanket, I placed markers every stitch pattern repeat. So I automatically knew, when I slipped the stitch marker, if I was supposed to knit or purl. If I was off, I would backtrack to find I had made a mistake in the previous pattern repeat, and tink (knit backwards) the number of stitches needed for me to fix the mistake. This helped me avoid having to frog rows and rows of my blanket project!
-
Knit in public without worrying about losing your place.
If you like to knit in public, it can be helpful to use stitch markers to keep track of your place. This will help you to avoid losing your place if you have to stop knitting in the middle of a pattern repeat.
-
Share your knitting with others by showing them your stitch markers.
Stitch markers can be a fun way to show off your knitting to others. You can choose stitch markers that match the color of your project or that have a special meaning to you. Be the talk of your knit group or knit night by showcasing your newly acquired fancy stitch markers!
-
Have fun and be creative by experimenting with different types of stitch markers.
There are many different types of stitch markers available, so you can have fun experimenting with different styles and colors. As I mentioned earlier, I use a bigger, fancier, prettier stitch marker for the beginning of round. I will use some of my handcrafted Austrian Crystal markers, for example, which I love. Then, to mark sleeves or the back or the front stitches, I will use different sets of identical markers. This way, I automatically know if I'm at the sleeve, or the back. There are many resin markers I love, that keep me motivated when I'm reaching a boring section, or a section that's full of textured stitches that will need me to concentrate.

Use stitch markers to make your knitting more interesting.
Stitch markers can be used to add a decorative touch to your knitting. As I said, my beginning of row is always the prettiest marker, to keep me motivated to knit "just one more row"!
-
Use stitch markers to help you learn new knitting techniques.
Stitch markers can be used to help you learn new knitting techniques, such as cables or lace. They can help you to keep track of where you are in the pattern and avoid making mistakes. I always put my cables in between stitch markers. This way, I can zoom the stockinette stitches, and the marker serves as a breaking point, or an alert, that I've reached the next section.
-
Use stitch markers to help you troubleshoot problems in your knitting.
If you are having trouble with your knitting, stitch markers can help you to troubleshoot the problem. For example, if you are separating each pattern repeats by markers, you will quickly see if you're making a mistake because every section should begin with the same stitch. If you're slipping that marker and realize you're off, that's your cue to go back and fix it. This will help you to see where you are making mistakes and correct them before it's way too late!
As you can see, there are many benefits to using stitch markers in your knitting. If you are not already using them, I encourage you to give them a try. You may be happily surprised at how helpful they can be!
Happy Knitting!
